Freeness:: Old Man Luedecke

Although it’s incredibly wishful thinking right now, considering its been raining for roughly 3 straight weeks, but if you’re looking for the perfect artist to see live when the sun is beaming, the beer is cold, and the windows are wide open, Old Man Luedecke is your guy. The Ack and I saw him play at the Company House here in Halifax a couple years ago on a sunny Saturday afternoon, and we still talk about that show to this day. The place was full, Chris played for over two hours, and non one left until he was done.

So Old Man Luedecke is quite good, but you don’t need us to tell you that. He’s won a couple Junos, and garnered numerous other plaudits, but chances are you haven’t heard his first EP, Mole In The Ground, which was out of print for quite some time. Well, to celebrate his second Juno win, OML is giving away his debut as a free download during the month of May. I could tell you about it, but the description of the EP from the man himself is hard to beat:

It was recorded in three sweet hours in Halifax at the legendary Mullet studio. It was the winter after I returned to the East Coast from Dawson City Yukon where most of the songs were written over the winter of 2002. It was recorded at the urging of longtime friends Al Tuck and Charles Austin. It’s Al’s entrance to the studio that resulted in Yodelady’s intro of “Grandpa Burger?” because of the lunch he was finishing at his arrival. It’s a very simple demo that my wife Teresa did the artwork for. It was a local sensation that was encouraging enough to land me in the soup I’m in now.

The legendary Mullet studio. Al Tuck. Grampa Burger. What is there to say after that? Nothing, except to say go and get Mole In The Ground while it’s still available gratis, and while you’re at it, perhaps pick up My Hands are on Fire and other Love Songs or Proof of Love as well.
