I don’t know what it is about Adventures, the new album from Germany Germany (aka Victoria’s Drew Harris), that qualifies it as Friday Fun material, but it’s what I want to post on and it seems to suit today’s mood rather well. We’re heading into a long-weekend, normally a cause for much rejoicing, but it seems the mood is rather subdued in our part of the world as most of us are dreading the possibility of having one of our precious long weekends marred by all the rain we’ve been suffering through of late.
But let’s cast off those worries shall we? We’ll use the head-bob-inducing, chair-dance-inspiring power of Adventures to do it (17 tracks, 60 minutes, $5 via the Bandcamp = do it). The music Harris makes under his double-deutsche moniker is unabashedly electronic, which I appreciate, but there’s an underlying warmth and melody to it as well. It seems to alternate between carefully structured auditory crispness, and just-for-fun haphazardry best captured by this paragraph in the album description:
It might be worth noting a few things…Transatlantic is all put together from samples of a short laptop-recorded guitar/vocal track that my friend Emily put together. Adventures II is sampled (almost exclusively) from tapping a wineglass and recording it on an iPhone. Take Your Time is the same, only with a full acoustic piano. A few of the samples at the end of Cold Hands are from Home, a track from one of my previous albums (the sampled vocals in Reflections are from Dreams That Pass).
A full song of tapped-wineglass sounds? Sounds like it is a perfect Friday Fun candidate after all. It’s also a pretty great record, so snatch it up and use it as the soundtrack for your long weekend. Enjoy.
