News:: I like Fucked Up?

Admittedly, I’ve never been fanatical when it comes to Fucked Up. When I was on the Grand Jury in 2009, I was in the minority when it came to picking a winner and when the final decision was made, I left angry. I got that The Chemistry Of Common Life was a landmark record in terms of Canadian hardcore, I just didn’t connect with it. So be it. The world embraced the result so obviously I was off target. Fucked Up has continued to impress over the last two years and long since earned the distinction of Polaris Prize winner, even if I it wasn’t my choice.

So taking a listen to any singles from a new rock/hardcore opera was not exactly something high on my priority list. In fact, I am not sure I would have had I not read a quick disclaimer about the fourth and final single on Chipped Hip. So how does the battle of me vs. Queen of Hearts turn out? I’m warming a slice of humble pie. I haven’t listened to David Comes to Life from start to finish, but “Queen of Hearts” uses an melodic hook that Damian’s vocals hug like Russ Rankin back in the day. It’s a great track, but then out of nowhere female grab the spotlight and the party’s over.

The Other Shoe” showcases an equally huge sound balanced by a surprising hint of beauty, but don’t worry, “Ship of Fools” and “A Little Death” prove that even operating under the classification of rock opera, Fucked Up hasn’t forgotten their roots. The band is still loud, brash and a circle pit waiting to happen. If the rest of the album is this good, look the fuck out.
