Quick Hitters:: Graydon James & the Young Novelists and Andrew Sisk

A few days ago, songsillinois mentioned that Graydon James & The Young Novelist were probably a bit too epic to really find on home on his page, Oddly enough, they’re a perfect fit for herohill - beautiful, soaring, rootsy Canadiana - and I’ve still not written about their new EP, A Small Town Eulogy.

Not surprisingly, Craig’s take on the opening number is spot on. Beautiful harmonies and drum crashes and piano that hooks you from the first note all make “It Takes All Kinds” the type of song you hold close and sing eyes closed. The other songs (I love when Laura takes the lead on the closer, “Take Your Time”) on the EP, while not as majestic, still show talent. Considering their last release was a whopping 40-songs, a succinct, solid EP is a smart follow up and hints at a long career for these young musicians.

Montreal based song writer Andrew Sisk is a man without definition. Not a “if you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for everything” lack of character, more a refusal to let his creativity stagnate. Boundaries, genres, styles and sounds are blurred with fantastic success. He’s as apt to deliver a folksy uke confessional as a summery, nylon stringed bossa nova ode to a lover.

This time around, Sisk recruited a few friends to craft a ambient backdrop for his stories. Helped considerably by Mike Feuerstack’s moody steel notes and Mike Belyea’s drums, Sisk really shines in this configuration. The songs are catchy (the surprisingly muscular “Rotations and Flares” and the opener “History” show an energy I thought Andrew had left behind), but Andrew never sacrifices emotion or intimacy to grab your ear. Another solid addition to Sisk’s diverse catalog.
