Secret City Records has curated a roster of eclectic musicians that are consistently top shelf, despite each band sounding completely unique. Refusing to cater to a standard sound, it might be impossible for Secret City to put together a fluent gig, but the label’s latest signing, Daniel Isaiah, might be the bridge that connects the dots.
Hints of Canadiana, spacey pop, warm organ notes and even Dixieland are introduced with a deft touch, but Isaiah works best when he’s delivering Gold-era Ryan Adams nuggets like “High Twilight” and “Anita, On the Banks.” Isaiah might not be a known commodity like his label mates, but he certainly proves his label’s ear is as fine-tuned as ever, and without question High Twilight is a record with many rewards.
Montreal’s Folly & The Hunter recorded a lovely Loney, Dear cover on an abandoned street. Really, that’s all I need to say. As a part of the Here On Out series, the band, one I love, delivers a charming version of “I Was Only Going Out” that is only enhanced by the solitude and silence of the remote location. The beautiful wash of keys, banjo, acoustic and closing harmonies could melt a glacier, so obviously it does a number on your broken heart.
