It’s been a while since the alarmingly frail pysiques of Kid N’ Play graced the hill on a Saturday morning, and that means one thing: we’re long overdue for some remix action. Problem solved, as you can see, we’ve got a crisp new edition of What’s This, A Party?, our irregular ode to Canadian-related remixes, ready to roll.
Speaking of getting ready to roll, Canada’s DJ champ Skratch Bastid is working on a new mixtape right now that he’s calling The Entertainer, but as a teaser for that mix he’s released one of the remix/mash-ups that will be featured on it. As We Enter the Gravel Pit pairs the fast raps from the Wu’s Gravel Pit with the music from As We Enter off of Nas & Damien Marley’s collabo album Distant Relatives. As per usual with these Skratch Bastid mashups, it’s done immaculately, and I’m not sure if there’s a connection between the songs, but they fit together really well.
To go along with that, we’ve got something rather different, a collaboration between two Montreal artists, with Doldrums (a mysterious collective described as “faceless shapeshifters” and gained some notoriety from their last release – which was put out on VHS. What, no Betamax release Doldrums? Not cool.) remixing their tourmate Grimes’ Crystal Ball. It’s billed as a remix, but they’ve almost completely re-worked the song into a psychedelic, discordant affair. Interesting stuff though, so give it a listen and enjoy your weekend.
