In general, most mixtapes have some element of fun to them, but you’re going to have a hard time getting more enjoyment than those done by the best DJ Bedford Nova Scotia ever produced: Skratch Bastid. The man known as Paul Murphy when he isn’t Bastid-izing the Technic 1200′s has to be one of the hardest working DJ’s in Canada, and I don’t just mean the fact that he plays more shows in a year then your average Vegas lounge lizard. He’s forever cranking out new remixes/mashups/blends that are consistently awesome.
His latest batch of those can be found on a brand-spanking new mixtape called The Entertainer. It’s awesome, and it’s available as a free download (in exchange for your email address, but if you aren’t willing to put yourself on SB’s mailing list to get a mix of this quality, then we can’t be interweb friends anymore), so do you and your weekend music listening plan a solid and go snatch it up.
Trust me, we’re not huge remixy/mash-it-up dudes here at the hill, but pretty much everything the Bastid puts out gets a play here. Why? Well Paul has such a passion for music that he’s not just taking two hot jams and ramming them together – he spends time at his craft and finds a way to effortlessly mix songs from a wide range of genres regardless of whether there’s an obvious link or not.
As the man himself says: “If you are a music lover – there is something on here for you.” He’s not kidding either. Lou Reed mixed with old school DJ favorite, Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner?” Sure. Familiar funky soul from Otis Redding, Wilson Picket (word to Black Sheep!), Thunder & Lightning (that’s where that “Step Up!” sample comes from!), and Aaron Neville? Yep, got that. Excellent old school selections? Yessir (Pos K!). Amazing reconstructions of classic tracks? Check (EPMD’s Rampage, and the awesome Paid in Full/Ofra Haza/Coldcut remix scratch up). Bringing back the best horns ever featured on a hip hop track? Also got that (from Outkast’s playariffic SpottieOttieDopaliscious). Seriously, if you’re an 80′s/90′s hip hop head and this mix doesn’t make you smile many, many times, I’d be shocked. That said, it should make anyone smile just as easily, so go get entertained by The Entertainer.

[...] Hip hop is a funny old thing. I’ve listened to a ton of it, to the point where I’d like to think that I now know many of the original songs that some of the more familiar samples are pulled from. But of course, just when I think that, I come across a song that has some vocals that I’ve heard sampled/scratched for years but had no idea where they originated from. The song in question is Bumpin’ Bus Stop from Thunder & Lightning, which is on Skratch Bastid’s new mixtape The Entertainer. [...]
