News:: Halifax Jazzfest!

Digable PlanetsIn the immortal words of Kamaal Ibn John Fareed, Jazz, (We’ve Got). In fact, starting this weekend, we shall have all of the Jazz. The 25th Anniversary edition of the Halifax Jazzfest kicks off this weekend, and does so in fine style. Not only will there be a Jazz-party cruise featuring much-loved Halifax klezmer-funketeers Gypsophilia on Friday night, but Saturday sees the release party for the new album (The Mint Condition) from extreme hill favorites The Extremities.

The Grand Wizard Ghettosocks will be kicking things off that evening, oh, and headling the affair will be The Pharcyde. Yep, Theeee Pharcyde. I don’t care if you’re not as old as us, or you don’t have any Pharcyde cassettes in a box in your closet, that is awesome. So get with the program and get yourself to the Festival Tent on Saturday evening.

Like your Jazz a little more on the classic side? Well how about the pride of New Orleans: The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. I know pretty much nothing about Jazz, but as a loyal, longtime Saints fan, I’ve been to New Orleans a couple times, and these guys are absolutely revered down there, as I’m sure they are pretty much everywhere they go. So hit the Festival Tent this Sunday night if you want to see these legends in action.

There are no doubt tons of other legends playing throughout the week, so check the festival schedule to find your niche, but legends of the hip hop variety are more my speed, so next Saturday the Festival Tent will again be the place to be as Jazz-Rap legends the Digable Planets will hit Halifax. Cool Like Dat, Where I’m From - you know the deal, add Montreal’s Nomadic Massive to the evening, and this should be quite the affair. And for the “not another old-school rap act coming to Halifax” crowd, you should know that Shabazz Palaces, one of the most buzzworthy hip hop acts of the moment for the Pitchfork set, is helmed by none other than Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler of DP. So seeing this show will make you super hip in more ways than one.

I told you, we’ve got all the Jazz. So go and get some, Halifax.
