Best-of ’11:: Folk Songs of Canada Now

Stories told, songs sung. It’s simple this history of ours. Tales of murder, pain, love and loss are written daily and forgotten instantly, but the best are passed from generation to generation like currency, land or genes.

In a time where the public is more consumed by those that find and hoard to fuel their own greed or sickness, folklorist Henry Svec - last heard around here under the anonymity of The CFL Sessions - spends his time unearthing stories and documenting melodies for the community. Folk Songs of Canada Now, to use an overused by highly applicable term, is a collection of modern field recordings; imperfections, ambient noise and the environment that shaped the sounds and define the settings are all preserved.

I hesitate to draw attention to any of the artists, especially Henry himself. The songs are bigger than the artists, and not written or sung for money or adulation. They are simply interpretations of the same songs that have risen from the spirit of the people. Regardless, the talent involved is almost criminal. Al Tuck, Andrew Penner, Olenka Krakus, Andrew Vincent, Mathias Kom, Chris Eaton, Jenny Omnichord, Wax Mannequin, Andrew Sisk, Geoff Berner… each recorded voice is deserving of attention from today’s music fan, but no singer strives for anything greater than preservation of sound and ideals.

Folk Songs of Canada Now is a time capsule that will never date itself with neon ski jackets, thin ties, or awful angular hair. The voice of the people is consistent, impacted by morals and politics and fueled by love. Svec has selflessly collected these for us, asking only that we pay attention. With the half life of music today and how highly disposable song has become, that is perhaps the biggest gift we can ever receive. Download this collection now.
