How about some Biz Markie for your Tuesday? This past weekend at a friends’ BBQ, my wife found herself, like so many other intoxicated white people have done before her, belting out the chorus to Biz Markie’s infamous tale of infidelity and unrequited love: “Just A Friend.”
On top of generating many laughs for all involved, this left me wanting to hear some Biz again. However, even though, like everyone who is alive and has ever heard the song, I enjoy “Just A Friend”, but I don’t want to post it. It’s been a little overplayed down the years, and Biz has so many enjoyable songs that don’t get the same kind of love, so lets put some of those up. In fact, let’s go back to Biz’s beginning, to his first 12″/EP for Make The Music With Your Mouth, Biz. Just look at that cover: he’s billed as “The Inhuman Orchestra”, there’s a double-Biz action shot for no reason, the Coca-Cola shirt, the classic, custom Biz hat, and he’s rocking what I assume to be Larry Bird Weapons. Add in TJ Swan (I assume?) tying his shoe and looking like he didn’t expect to be in the photo, and you’ve got a hip hop classic on the cover art alone.
Beyond that, who doesn’t love “Make The Music With Your Mouth, Biz?” That was my favorite Biz jam for a long time, and it’s still up there, although I have a weird affection for Spring Again. But the classic Marley Marl beat with the shuffling, snapping drum track and classical piano on Make The Music is the perfect backdrop for Biz to introduce himself. Of course Marley produced the whole EP and it was one of the earliest “Juice Crew” releases, I do believe (pretty sure Marley produced Shante & Shan records before this one), and it was also a great intro to the mirth-making talents of one Marcel Hall. Speaking of intros, I’m also posting “A One, Two”, because when I think of Biz, I often hear this beatbox/routine in my head (“Let me, introduce, myself”), and it’s been sampled plenty down the years.
A beatboxer & emcee at the time, and a future DJ, record collector, and crazy crooner – The Biz is one of a kind, and just because it’s awesome and mentions BDK in the second verse, I’m also putting up another Biz classic: “The Vapors.” Enjoy!
