I’ve always enjoyed Craig Mack, well, at least his first album has always been a fav of mine, with Flava In Ya Ear being one of my all-time favorite songs. So I was a little surprised to find out the Craig had put out some songs previous to that album under the name MC EZ with assistance from “Troup”, which might be his DJ, a backup band of some kind, or maybe his backup dancers (they had names back in the day!), or perhaps they are the homeless man’s Troop - I have no idea and Michael GooglĂ© has little to know info on them for me.
What Monsieur GooglĂ© did have to offer, however, was linkage to what I think is the only 12″ Craig released under his MC EZ moniker (as an aside, it sounds like it’s pronounced “ease” instead of “e-z” which is what I assumed). Get Retarded is the more well-known and better of the two, with a classic drum track and some lovely soul samples (it’s a Monk Higgins sample apparently…Monk Higgins! Why is this first time I’m hearing that name, might as well book it now - next week’s OSM = Songs with Monk Higgins samples). Craig deploys a rhyme steez that contains hints of the flow he would use later under Puff-Diddly-Daddy-Dirt-Money-Dog’s tutelage, mixed with a traditional, old-school cadence. The more fast-paced B-Side, Just Rhymin’, is rather enjoyable in it’s own right, and the 12″ itself was put out by FRESH Records, which I enjoy immensely.
So there you go, nothing overly exciting for the return of OSM after we skipped it last week, but it does give me another reason to post Flavor In Ya Ear, which I assume no one will be too upset about. Enjoy.
