Although the name dictates otherwise, I feel like most electro-pop, bedroom acts never really fit their fictional setting. The production and sterility is more akin to the plastic slip covers that adorn furniture in old-fashioned sitting rooms with patterns vacuumed into the carpet and a strict “no friends in here” policy. The protective sheen that encases the tracks prevents you from sinking into the discussion and actual letting go.


So when Montreal’s Caila Thompson-Hannant, a.k.a. Mozart’s Sister, openly suggests you to “come on take your shoes off” with a Nico like cool, you feel included. The three-song EP is full of warmth and personality — and on the hefty, five-minute closer “Contentedness”, it’s also full of some of the same creativity cultivated by other Montreal acts like Pat Jordache and Adam & The Amethsyts and hints at the tribal energy Merrill Garbus delivers to the masses — even with the inorganic building supplies Caila uses.


The thumping beat and quirky synths jump start the Dear Fear EP, but it’s the way Caila’s voice twists around the track like a mountain side car chase. She hugs the lines, keeping the tension high and any listener could have sat back and simply enjoyed the ride, but she makes the bold choice to downshift and offer a shimmering breakdown that sounds beautiful. “Single Status” is a more standard dance floor anthem for indie club nights, but Caila refuses to settle for simply delivering a catchy hook. Whistles and moans heighten your senses, and you start to scan for any intruding or unexpected noise.


I have no idea if Mozart’s Sister is writing new songs — this EP has been kicking around since March — but I certainly hope so. I always feel uncomfortable when I think I should ask for a coaster or use the wrong fork.
