Contests:: Win The Wooden Sky City of Light Cassette

In case people forgot, I fell hard for the dusty Canadiana that Toronto’s The Wooden Sky unleashed on their last LP. “If I don’t come home you’ll know I’m gone” was a stunning collection of songs; full of wide open spaces but still claustrophobic enough to feel the pressures and grip of the city getting tighter.

The band is ready to release a new LP in 2012, but they decided to run a limited edition of tapes to give away to fans featuring six new songs. City of Light is full of beautiful, slow movers. The opening bended notes of “Lonely People (Aint Got Much These Days)” and the distorted notes that dance behind the gritty riff and harmonies on “Angelina” set the tone for this EP, but the band exposes some new wrinkles.

The surprising cinematic outro to “City of Light/Dancing at my Window (Reprise) really adds a new emotion to the cassette and “Take Me Out” wouldn’t sound out of place at a “guys, grab your girl” type dance or as an opening number on a June/John tour. I know these minor adjustments might not constitute a reinvention, but they show The Wooden Sky continues to augment their sound without sacrificing the songwriting that helps them stand out from the endless number of bands hoping to benefit from the same collages.

So, we have (3) copies of City of Light to give away. All you have to do is send us an email with your contact information — herohill AT gmail DOT COM — or leave the important details in the comments section below. Good luck!

Wooden Sky was one of the highlights of the Mariposa Folk Festival 2010! They are such a breath of fresh air. It would be great to hear their new music.

Two of the members are from my hometown of Cobourg Ontario. They played at my high school in Cobourg two years ago. They have been a favourite of mine since I’ve heard them. Everyone should give this band a chance. They are a gift to the music scene.

Love ‘em and hope to see them live someday (Many fans reside in Brandon, MB — right on the #1!! Just West of Winnipeg. Easy to find and hey, you’ll be driving through anyway!!)
