What’s this, a Monday Video Hits? Unheard of! It’s strange I know, but this was intended for last week until work decided to kick my ass on Thursday & Friday, and so Monday videos it is!
This is going to come as a surprise to roughly no one that reads the hill, but trying to make a go of it as a working band in Canada is hard. Very hard. I certainly knew this, but reading this blog entry from Toronto’s Papermaps about their recent HPX adventure was a good reminder of that. Papermaps were the opener for the free Plants and Animals/Stars show which was moved from the Grand Parade to Saint Antonios Community Hall, in order to leave the Occupy NS posse undisturbed, and that meant a number of changes for everyone involved. I know It’s the kind of thing you sign up for when you’re in a band, but it sounds like the Papermaps crew handled it in good humour, so good on them. And good on them for their latest video, for Reunion, which features the band and their fans sending messages to their 16 year old selves. A fun idea that resulted in a really fun video.
If you want to talk about someone else who’s been through the slog of trying to make a living from making music, Ottawa’s Chris Page fits the bill to a T. After years of making records and touring Canada like crazy with The Stand GT, Chris has continued making music, both in solo form and as part of the raucous trio Camp Radio, mainly, one has to surmise, for the joy he gets out of doing it. This was on display a couple weeks ago when he played a couple hill-related sets during HPX, and Chris gave it his all despite there not being the kind of big, boisterous crowd that we’d hoped for. His sets were great, as are his last couple albums, so check Chris’ video for Summertime Out below.
Been a little dour thus far hasn’t it? Well let’s pep things up a bit with a sunny video from Winnipeg duo The Happy Unfortunate for 89 Vibin’ off their last album No Time To Sleep. Golden Age inspired hip hop and some spring-like vibes, can’t beat that right now. Enjoy.
