Quick Hitters:: Notes To Self

If you’re like me, there’s a question you ask yourself every now and again, and that question is “do I cover enough Toronto hip hop on the hill?”. Well obviously you’d substitute the name of your particular blog or publication in place of the hill (and I’m assuming you do indeed have a blog, as our traffic indicates that our readerships is largely comprised of other bloggers and some of the artists we cover), but you get the gist.

It would be pretty delusional to claim anywhere other than T.O. as Canada’s hip hop mecca (that said, it would also be delusional to leave out Halifax when talking about Canada’s hip hop history, which some often do), yet I don’t think I post as much big smoke hip hop as I’d like. Why? Well there are many reasons I’m sure, but mainly I think it’s because the majority of the stuff we’re sent from up there isn’t my bag, and also because a lot of the dudes who may be doing stuff that is in fact my bag don’t know we exist. Anyhoo, enough of the hill’s hip hop-related existential crises for the day, because I am indeed bringing you some great T.O. hip hop today.

Notes To Self are a five man outfit that put the “true” in true school with a lineup featuring MC’s Swamp Donkey and Roshin, producer/rapper Bronze One, world renowned DJ/turntablist DJ Dopey and writer/illustrator(!) Elicser. Their bio claims they have “successfully created a cohesive group dynamic reminiscent of traditional rap groups like De La Soul and Tha Liks.” and after checking out their two most recent songs (available on their Soundcloud site), I can’t disagree with that. With such a classic underground sound & vibe, it’s no surprise to see they already hooked up with underground legends Dilated Peoples on their last album, have again recently as Babu joins them on the bangin’ Lick Shots. The Cali connects continue on the second single, with Fashawn joining them on the soulful & addictive (had the chorus from this one in my head all day) Mr. Polite.

So who’s going to be checking out the NTS back-catalog? I think I might be, and keeping an ear open for new music for them too.
