Last month, newest Arts & Crafts signee Cold Specks cannon balled into the blog buzz pool and the splash created some 50-year storm, Point Break sized swells (“no way Cold Specks is bigger than Waimea, bro”).

Her dark gospel gem, “Holland”, hinted at a voice that could stop you in your tracks and the off-kilter arrangement was as unique and unconventional as it was enjoyable.

The more I listened to “Holland”, the more I thought I had heard the song before. After some research and a quick hunt through my old Best-of Lists from ’09, I was listening to Basket of Figs. Not to get all Lana Del Ray about it (especially because from Day 1, Al’s talent was obvious and the EP was never really released), but “Holland” first appeared on the fantastic Oh Eye, Oh Night EP, before Ms. Spx became known as Cold Specks.

The demo sounds less traditional and the double tracked vocals give the song a different feel, but that voice. Oh, that voice. Enjoy, and brace yourself for her monster debut later this year.
