I’ll freely admit to not knowing much about Etta James, outside of the fact that she seemed to be a pretty amazing woman. That said, I certainly had a song come to mind when I heard about her passing a couple weeks ago - it just so happens that the song which started playing in my head was Def Jef’s Droppin’ Rhymes On Drums.

Droppin’ Rhymes on Drums has always been a favorite of mine, but I have no idea how the Jef/Etta collabo came to pass. I’ve always assumed there was some kind of connection between Jef or his label and Etta, but regardless, I always thought it was very cool of her to be on that song, as most singers of her generation were not likely fans of hip hop, or might have even been angry about sampling and thought the kids were ripping them off. Whatever the case, Etta got on the song, killed it, and was a large reason it’s considered a classic by many.

So, here’s a chance to check out an old school classic if you’re not familiar with Def Jef, while at the same time paying homage to a legend. R.I.P. Etta.
