If I ain’t better than Sauks, I’m the closest one. -D-Sisive
Which legendary T.O. rapper would have Derek Christoff aping Jay-Z in order to pay tribute to him? Why it’s Saukrates of course. If you’ve ever read anything about hip hop on the ol’ internet, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the phrase “your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper”. Well I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that’s actually true for a number of Canadan MC’s where Saukrates is concerned.
Like me, I’m sure many of them can recall being blown-minded by hearing Sauks’ trademark, sing-song flow, alongside of folks like Common, Pharaohe Monch and Masta Ace in the late 90’s. He’s also got an array of skills that has seen him not only work with Redman & his Gilla House label, but also tour with Nelly Furtado.
So what I’m saying here is that Saukrates is good and we should all give him his propers. This is something we can do starting tomorrow when his new album Season One drops. If this throwback jam that features Nickelus F and k-os is any indication, it’s going to be rather enjoyable. Positive, skillful , and musical, it’s the kind of hip hop I’m happy to get behind. And check the video below – forget Drake in the Skydome (yes, I know what they call it now) with a bunch of dudes he hired to look like his goonsquad, Sauks in a Hamilton arena at a kids’ hockey game is real Canadian hip hop.
