The Dudes! Quite honestly, I was tempted to just quit writing this post after writing “The Dudes!”, because anyone who’s into these Calgary mischief makers would read that and go “Fuck yeah, The Dudes!” and then go check out their new EP/album Barbers, Thieves and Bartenders.

But that isn’t really fair to those of you who aren’t familiar with The Dudes or are perhaps new to the hill (if you’re a regular on the hill, you know The Dudes are forever infamous around here since their HPX ’07 show where they were treated like rock royalty - even Dudes frontman Dan Vacon was amazed by the reception they received). So here’s the skinny on what you need to know about this band: The Dudes play un-apologetically fun rock & roll and they play it very well. I know that isn’t enough for some folks, and in fact it, would be looked down on by many a tastemaker, but I care not. The Dudes mix roguish charm with expert rock chops in a way that has me re-visiting their word-association-titled releases (Brains.Heart.Guitar, Blood Guts Bruises Cuts, etc) with a frequency much greater than many an artier album.

Take The Dress below for example. It contains a call & response breakdown along the lines of “Who wants to get some lovin’?…..LOVIN!….Who wants to get some love?” which I have sung along with since pretty near the first damn time I heard it. Can I think of another band that could get me to sing along to a similar line? Not really. Along with American Girl, Tear It Up and Saturday Night (which I believe was written for some kind of of CBC HNIC contest), The Dudes prove ithey’ve got more anthems on a 6 song record than many bands can produce in 6 albums. Do this matter to you? Perhaps not, but if you ever find yourself with a hankering for songs about beers, buds & girls from a great band that don’t take themselves too seriously, then you need to get with The Dudes.
