Perhaps you’ve noticed things are kind of a one man show around here over the last week or so – I’ve been trying to hold down the fort here on the hill as the Ack and his family complete their move to Upper Canada. It’s a bummer that they had to go – of course I’ll certainly miss Bryan, his wife and kids too, on a personal level, but it’s also sad that Halifax is losing such a great family at a time when we need as many of those as we can get.

That said, the move was made for many great reasons, so please join me in wishing the Ack the best of luck in his new home. Hopefully he’ll be back on the posting once they get settled as I’m sure the folks who come here for reviews are certainly not coming to read my nonsense. Also, the hill is once again a geographically-diverse entity, so if you’re looking for the local Canadian music blogger in the greater Burlington area, you know who to go to.

That said, I’m fairly positive that if the Ack were still here in Halifax, he’d be joining me at tonight’s Charles Bradley show in the Jazz Fest’s big tent down on the waterfront. As it is, my wife and I will happily head down to the show tonight to soak up some soul from the man who’s awesomely known as “The Screaming Eagle of Soul” (FYI, Bradley’s Wiki page is fantastic – highly recommended reading as his life & career have been anything but conventional). Charles has been knocking ‘em dead on the festival circuit since he signed to Daptone records, and the Ack was desperate to see him at Sappyfest last summer (look at Charles breaking it down in a Thriller-esque jacket at Sappyfest in that pic over there).

I expect nothing less tonight, so you’d be wise to make this show. I was wowed by the venue last night at the Deltron/Maestro/Wijeratneworks show – obviously with such a lineup I expected it to be good, but I thought the sound was fantastic. Should be a different vibe tonight, perhaps a bit more laid back, but I can’t think of a better way to spend a Friday night.
