I have to admit, after a long weekend during which I both helped my neighbour celebrate his 40th birthday (yes, 40! I’m old, but not quite that old…yet) by joining him in drinking a mini keg of Garrison’s fine Tall Ship Amber and helped my cousin and his wife chase their one year old twins around my house, I was a little groggy yesterday. Luckily I found the perfect musical companion for my state of mind in the floating, spiraling & sprawling goodness of GIGAS’ debut Gone Completely.

I had heard GIGAS name bandied about in Halifax-oriented music discussion before, but I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t actually heard them until yesterday. I stumbled across one of their songs whilst I delayed the start of my work day watching the Lawrencetown surf video for this Quicksilver Frozen Moments surf shop video challenge dealie. GIGAS sound seems to be simultaneously heavy and light, with various percussion elements crash on top of each other, while airy, washed-out vocals are used to lighten the mood. It’s the perfect kind of sound to lose yourself in as you long for the beach or your preferred summer leisure destination.

So while I’m late to the GIGAS party (their album was released last December) and have very little excuse, I’d encourage you to grab their record and add it to your summer listening rotation.
