Let’s start this week with some good and some bad. First, it appears that the electronic escape duo, Southern Shores, has packed up, headed west to Toronto (in both the literal, and Miracle Fortress sense) and left behind Canada’s ocean playground.
It makes sense, obviously, to gravitate to a larger city with a better climate and audience for the music they create, but it’s always hard to see another talented act leave the city.
But, the good is very, very good. The duo’s debut EP – Atlantic – won us over, and Southern Shores softened news of the pilgrimage with the launch of another EP.
New World is essentially a progression of what made Atlantic so enjoyable; tropical breezes, beautiful vocal samples and steel drums usher you to the seaside retreat of your choice, battering you with golden sun and surfable waves but without question the duo is digging in new crates for inspiration. R&B and even hints of hip hop are teased into the samples (“Sankasa”) and the result is something more lasting than just another chillwave escape.
Recommended if you ever loved the shit out of Beat Street and Kenny Kirkland’s jam to impress Rae Dawn Chong.

[...] Ack captured this sentiment in his post on their latest EP, New World, but listening to the EP again today brought that home to me again. [...]
