COUSINS - Nans

Cousins
It’s no secret that we love the Aaron Mangle-helmed outfit Cousins here at the hill, but I’m pretty sure we’re not alone in this - pretty much anyone who has heard them seems to feel the same way. Well, if you’re attending HPX, you’ll have 2 chances to join the Cousins fan-fam by checking them out as they play right before Thee Oh Sees at Reflections on Wednesday, Oct. 19th or on Saturday (Oct. 22nd) during the CKDU brunch at Gus’.

Miracle Fortress - Miscalculations

Miracle Fortress
Saturday night feels like the perfect time to continue our HPX posting series with a song from basketball enthusiast Graham Van Pelt, aka Miracle Fortress. I say it’s a perfect fit because not only is MF’s latest album, Was I The Wave? filled with electronic pop gems that are perfect weekend enhancers, but Graham & Co are also going to be apart of a show on Saturday, Oct. 22nd that should be more off the hook than your rowdiest Sat night. The Meligrove Band, Suuns, Miracle Fortress and Chad VanGaalen at the Olympic Community Hall? Fairly amazing I’d say.

Dog Day - Part Girl

Dog Day - Deformer
You can’t have HPX without Halifax mainstays Dog Day now can you? DD might have refactored themselves into the husband and wife duo of Nancy and Seth Smith, but they are still one of our fair city’s best bands. If you have yet to check out their latest album, Deformer, you can check out the Ack’s review for a bit of insight on how the band has arrived at this point. You’d also be wise to check out Dog Day during HPX as they headline the Pigeon Row Showcase on Friday, Oct. 21st.

JEFF The Brotherhood - Diamond Way

Other than casually seeing their name around, I knew nothing about Tennessee’s JEFF The Brotherhood before hearing they were playing HPX ’11. Turns out Jake and Jamin Orrall are another one of those loud, bluesy, garage rock duos we’ve seen fairly frequently over the last few years. I’ve only checked out a few of their songs tonight, but based on that small body of evidence I’m going to assume they will be pretty damn good live, so check them out at Reflections on Thursday, Oct. 20th.

Reversing Falls - Is This Thing On

MTL’s Reversing Falls are great. Don’t believe me? Just read what herohill.com had to say about them! RF have their self-titled debut LP coming out early next year, and they are part of a jam-packed lineup playing Gus’ Pub on Friday, Oct 21st during HPX. Things are finally coming up Fallshouse.

The Spring Standards - Queen of the Lot

We broke the seal on posting songs from the American acts playing HPX ’11 yesterday with a new one from the Juan Maclean, so why not keep the ball rolling with The Spring Standards? This NY-based trio has a very melodic, and musical sound, with each member being a multi-instrumentalist and trading vocal duties along the way. They should be fun to see live, and you’ll get two chances during the festival: Friday, Oct. 21st at CKDU and Saturday, Oct. 22nd at The Company House.

Juan Maclean - Everybody Get Close

How about we give some of the American acts coming up for HPX some love shall we? “DFA dance-punk don” the Juan Maclean seems like as good a place to start as any, and since he just released a new b-sides & remix-type record, it’s also topical! Ol’ Juan will be doing a DJ set at The New Palace on Friday, Oct. 21st (at 2AM sucka, so get ready to par-tay until the wee hours of the morning) and if it’s all as funky as the jam below, it should be a crazy night.

Jennifer Castle - Powers

Jennifer Castle
Jennifer Castle seems to have been on the come up as of late, as her name seems to be coming up quite frequently on interwebby type things. And that includes the Ack’s review of her last release. Well if you’re heading to HPX ’11, you can catch her perform her brand of “hazy collages”, as the Ack put it, for yourself when she plays The Company House on Saturday, Oct 22nd.

Born Gold - Alabaster Bodyworlds

Edmonton’s Gobble Gobble have appeared on the hill before, but they shall be appearing at HPX ’11 under a new guise: Born Gold. If the song below is any indication, Born Gold is indeed going to be gold Jerry, gold! So check them out when they headline the dancefest which will no doubt occur on Wednesday, Oct. 19th at Gus’ Pub.

The Belle Comedians – Modern Touch

Halifax’s The Belle Comedians are up next in our bunch of “B” acts from the ’11 Halifax Pop Explosion, and if you’re looking for a bit more info on them you can check my post on their last EP from this spring. That might help get you prepped if you plan to hit the Company House on Saturday, Oct. 22nd, where BC will be kicking things off.
