Contest:: Holy Fuck, it's New Year's Eve

Dec 31st @ 10PM. Holy Fuck, Rich Aucoin and DJ Loukas Stilldrunk. Open till 3:30AM. $40adv, $50 door.
In case 50 duckets is too much for you, your pals at herohill are here to help. We have two tickets to the show and all you have to do is send us an email with the subject - "Holy Fuck, It's New Year's Eve" - or leave your details in the comments section below. We will pick a winner late tomorrow night.
Good luck.
Oh, and just because it's awesome, I'm also sharing the remix of the Said the Whale track, Gentleman. The remix uses some of Lovely Allen, some classic Who and Shad raps on it and drops New Edition, Ralph Tresvant, BBD and bumpin' Poison (which I'm sure both members of herohill did the electric slide or running man to, and I also did for a lip sync in Grade 10 - wait, did I share too much?).

Christmas Party:: Said The Whale, Woodpigeon & Paper Moon

After all, what better to get you into the festive spirit than a little Canadian Christmas fare? Nothing, I say. So how about some songs from Said The Whale, Woodpigeon, and Papper Moon? Very lovely all around. But for starters, here a very charming video sent to us by Vancouver singer-songwriter Hilary Grist, who drew all the artwork for the stop-time animation video for her song Branch's Arms. Rather lovely it is too. Enjoy.

Video Hits:: Tom Fun, Said The Whale, Octoberman, Little Girls, Classified

As you might imagine since we haven't run an episode of Video Hits in a while, we've got quite a backlog of them. So if you've sent us a vid in the last few weeks, our apologies, but perhaps send us a reminder and we'll try and get it up. So in the interest of backlog clearing, we've got a super-sized edition for you today. Five great videos on deck, so I'll do a quick intro and get out the way (Luda style).
The Tom Fun Orchestra's Bottom of the River somehow got nominated for a UK music video award, and that's pretty awesome, so I figured that deserved a posting. One great animtaed video deserves another, and so Said the Whale's vid for Camilo (The Magician) is up next. STW were one of the many buzz bands to play at the just-concluded HPX, another being Little Girls, and so their vid for Youth Tunes gets a posting. While on the subject of folks playing Halifax, Octoberman are playing Gus' Sunday night, so we've got their clip for Thirty Reasons here as well. I've said this before, but I've always enjoyed Classified's videos, and since he's got a new one for the awesome Can-rap all-star track Quit While You're Ahead, I had to put that up too. Enjoy!

Halifax Pop Explosion Preview:: Said the Whale

Said the Whale is an indie pop outfit, nothing more, nothing less. They write catchy, quick hitting tracks - although, they do shift effortlessly to Decemberists style tales (can't you hear Meloy singing "a black day in December") or even the smooth styles of Voxtrot - that grab your ear on first listen. I think that's because instead of convoluted narratives, the quintet writes what they know. Whether it's a camping trip with sunburned arms or the changes happening to the city they call home, there is something honest about this band.
Throw in the fact, The Magician (Camilo) is probably the jam of the year when it comes to Canadian indie rock (I mean, even Grant Lawrence called it the song of the summer), and I think it's safe to assume that if you can't get into our showcase, you have a rock solid second option.
