Cursed Arrows - Skin Behind The Shroud

Cursed Arrows – Skin Behind The Shroud

Time is a precious commodity these days, and so I’m afraid that records I’d normally like to post on are often getting lost in the shuffle. Case in point: Skin Behind The Shroud, the last release from Halifax-based duo Cursed Arrows. For some reason, I assumed we were caught up with the doings of Halifax-based [...]

Reviews:: Zachary Lucky Saskatchewan

There’s a loneliness that dominates Zachary Lucky‘s arrangements. Zachary’s latest EP, Saskatchewan, offers the contented sadness that develops on days where you are left with nothing to do except watch the odometer turn. Sure, these songs might be a love letter to the province he calls home, but there’s more at play here. Lucky uses [...]

Shop Local:: Virgil’s Girls

A few weeks ago, I casually mentioned that the sound that blasts across the Bay of Fundy has slowing changed from post-Sloan anthems and fiddle jams to swampy, garage riffs and distorted pop. When you consider bands like Outtacontroller, Cousins, Dog Day, and Long Weekends you realize it’s an embarrassment of skuzzy, scrappy riches down [...]

4th Pyramid - So Balboa f. Saukrates

4th Pyramid – So Balboa f. Saukrates

Here’s a fact: Saukrates is great. If you’re a Canadian hip hop enthusiast over a certain age, there’s a good chance you have a soft spot in your heart for The Underground Tapes, I know I certainly do. So then, when a song with a Big Soxx feature comes across our cyber desk, I gets an auto-listen. It certainly doesn’t hurt when it comes backed with a Rich Kidd boomer as a backdrop, and this effort from T.O.’s 4th Pyramid does. Sauks provides the bridge as 4th Rocky 3′s the track on the 2nd single from his latest album, The Pyramid Scheme.

Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built

Japandroids – The House That Heaven Built

Oh hey, I know Mondays are super-exciting on their own, but would a new Japandroids track spice yours up a bit? I thought it might. Spoiler alert, it’s loud, and you will sing along. This is off their perfectly named new album, Celebration Rock, which will be out June 5th via Polyvinyl Record Co. (You [...]

Introducing:: Wand

Introducing:: Wand

When we last heard from Derek Janzen, he was creating kick drum heavy anthems disguised as bedroom compositions. His billowy guitars and dime stores synths invited you in, but the programmed beats inspired marching and purpose. I favorably compared his output to Cyrus’ monumental call to action (one of the few posts I’m proud to [...]

Reviews:: A. David MacKinnon The Past is a Foreign Country

David MacKinnon spent previous years constructing songs in a much more literal method than most artists. His melodies bellowed from instruments that had been soldered, hammered, fused and taped. They clanked and rattled with with raw energy that was only contained by the boundaries of plastic and vinyl hosts. Now, MacKinnon uses a more conventional [...]

Hey Ocean! - Big Blue Wave

Vancouver’s Hey Ocean! play the Seahorse tonight (with Aidan Knight), and if you’re looking to rock out with a cute band you could fill your boots at this show I’m thinking. Just look at this video for Big Blue Wave off their last EP: balloons, kids, young love, happy music times and Shad quietly reading [...]
