Shoeless Joe would be proud

In all fairness to Shoeless Joe there is some debate over whether or not he was in on the fix back in 1919. However, there is no doubt about this one. I've been attending Quebec Major Junior Hockey League games for 11 seasons now. Over that period of time it has become crystal clear to me that there is a conspiracy against the Halifax Mooseheads franchise when it comes to the officiating on the ice and the discipline handed out by the league office. Last night at the Metro Centre I witnessed another disgraceful display of biased refereeing which has become a regular occurrence when the Mooseheads play in the QMJHL playoffs. The executive of this league wants to make sure the QMJHL will be represented by a team from Quebec at the Memorial Cup and has no problem with being blatantly biased to protect that.

Let me state that this is not just hometown sour grapes on my part due to the fact that Halifax is down 3-0 in the series. I will be the first to admit that the Mooseheads have failed to show up for this series and deserve to be down 3-0. The team would be in this hole even with fair officiating. Having said that, I will now say as a long time supporter of the Halifax franchise that enough is enough when it comes to the QMJHL. The league has used us for financial gain and treated us, the best supported junior franchise in the country, with tremendous disrespect. There is absolutely no way this league will ever allow our franchise to win a league title. I will go as far as to say that this is a form of fixing matches and that the QMJHL brass and officials of the league should be banned for life, just like the 1919 Chicago White Sox. This will never happen since I'm quite certain every franchise outside of our city sees nothing wrong with gaining an unfair advantage over us, so I have a different solution.

There are 2 new franchises joining the QMJHL next season, both from the Atlantic region. This will now give us 7 Atlantic major junior teams. Stick a franchise in Fredericton too and you've got an even 8 teams for a new Atlantic Major Junior Hockey League. It's time to establish a new league where games will always be decided by the players on the ice, and not by a deeply rooted conspiracy designed to protect french culture. Expand the Memorial Cup to 5 teams and let the Atlantic champion take on the Quebec league champion with neutral referees from Ontario or the West so that a fair contest can take place.

I must admit that the lack of protest from the Mooseheads organization over the years has disappointed me as well. There are times when a brief complaint has been made by the coach or gm regarding officiating, but no real hard accusations like I'm making have ever been made. Even in this current series coach Al McAdam has not gotten on the case of the referees at all. If it were me I'd bring this problem to the attention of the national media. I would have thrown every extra stick over the boards and on to the ice...in sighted a riot in the building...held a post game press conference filled with explicits and flipping desks. It disappoints me that nobody this year or in years past has done that in an effort to stand up for the team and for the loyal fans of this great city who have spent their hard earned money supporting a franchise that has no chance of winning a league title due to the fix that has been on since we entered the league. Mooseheads owner Bobby Smith should tell QMJHL president Gilles Courteau to kiss his ass and rally support for an Atlantic league where we don't have to put up with this bullshit anymore.

I couldn't agree more. I was also disgusted with the officiating. All I can say is that Rimouski is gonna get rocked at the Memorial Cup.

Dude, you can't give up 21 goals in 3 games and 16 first period goals and blame the officiating. I agree it was sketchy at best, however rimouski is a better team than the mooseheads and the sweep proved it, poor officiating or not.

Dear Anonymous,
Please read the article again because I clearly said that Halifax didn't show up for this series and would be down 3-0 regardless of poor officiating or not. Therefore, I was not blaming the Mooseheads losing on the officiating as you suggest. Anyway, thank you for reading herohill and taking the time to leave your comment.
