Quick Hitters:: Hip Hop Odds And/Or Sods

Hezekiah - I Predict A Riot
I've been meaning to write about this album for a while, but never found the time. Well here's the time. Hezekiah grew up outside Philly, and as my favorite line from his bio puts it:

Once out of high school, Hezekiah linked up with arguably the only hip hop crew to ever exist in Delaware

That might've been his start, but he hooked up with The Roots in the early 90's and that put him on the path towards a career in the hip hop biz. He's certainly paid his dues (he has the label scars to prove it, see I See Yaw) and put n plenty of time working with Philly's top talent with. The result of that hard work is his latest album, I Predict A Riot, which was released last month on Rawkus/Soulspazm records. And a solid album it is. If you're a fan of The Roots, you should be checking this out. Hezekiah produced the majority of the alum, and he does a good job of mixing live instruments with programmed sounds to maintain a soulful boom-bap feel throughout. He's also a talented, confident MC, able to effortlessly shift between the uplifting, Get By-ish If One Falls to the playful slimmie-trolling anthem Single Now. Plus there's a song on the album produced by someone named Vegan Pork Grind, hard to beat that. But seriously, if you're looking for a solid, mature hip hop album, I Predict A Riot is worth your time.

Abdominal/Henri Faberge and the Adorables
All credit for this one is due to Matt from i(heart)music. Toronto's king of the speed raps, Abdominal was paired with wacky popsters Henri Fabergé and The Adorables for an episode of CBC's Fuse, and somewhat surprisingly, the results are very enjoyable. Why is it surprising? I have no idea, but often these collabos are better in theory than reality. Not the case here, as the songs are lots of fun. Matt has all the songs available, but here's a taste (unless I'm mistaken, someone drops in some Sunglasses At Night in the middle, have to love that).

Blueprint - Hand-Me-Downs (Live @ The Attic)
I just simply love this song, and only posted the video with my show recap, so here it is in all it's mp3 formatted glory. No perfectly good mp3's are going unused on my watch! Enjoy.
