Sunday Morning Coffee:: The Black Hat Brigade

Normally, my Sunday mornings are filled with mellow soul or country. I kind of like to start slowly and embrace the last day of the weekend. But today for some reason I woke up with tons of energy. As a result, a band I've been listening to all week and is going to jump start your day like a double shot of espresso.

The Black Hat Brigade - is going to get a lot of Wolf Parade nods. The yelping vocals really echo WP at times (like on Swords), but the band - at least in my opinion after listening to the three tracks from the upcoming EP about 20 times this week - aren't trying to write the same type of songs.

Rather than crunchy, high energy, compact riffs, the band prefers longer, more melodic adventures. They tend to work into a riff, taking the time to make sure they are all on the same page and seeing what happens. I wouldn't call it jamming or prog, but the songs display organic growth, even with all the electronic equipment.

Pictorial History is a nice mix of sounds that blends the robotic (like the effects and synths) with rapid fire drums and a nice bass line. It evolves into a song you'd hear in some apocalyptic sci-fi movie (yes, that is a compliment). It's going to be interesting to see where this band goes and how the EP shapes up, because these three songs are intriguing to say the least.

The EP is awesome...I got a copy on Saturday, and it sounds great. Almost as good as their live show, which is saying something, since their set at CMW was the highlight of my weekend.

Really, really digging them. I think these guys along with the Golden Hands Before God are going to be two of the bands we are going to be talking about at the end of the year....

I think the Wolf Parade comparison is a good one.

Also, as an FYI - I think the link to Pictorial History is dead/broken.
