News:: Free EP from Josh Reichmann and Paper Bag

A few years ago when I lived in TO, a buddy of mine was obsessed with Tangiers. Anytime he picked me up, there was a good chance Hot New Spirits would be in the stereo. They kind of fell out of sight and out of mind (especially after I left Toronto and they eventually broke up), so I was surprised to get an announcement from Paper Bag saying they had signed Josh Reichmann and his new band.

Josh had worked with Ian McGettigan under the moniker Jewish Legend, but now he’s back as the Josh Reichmann Oracle Band. The songs still have the swagger you’d expect from the experienced front man, but definitely show Josh exploring a new style. Life is Legal is laced with sax, flutes and a bit of theatre, and although it’s soulful, (thankfully) it doesn’t venture into that flavor du jour, stereotypical white-guy soul.

Songs like Great Shadows have a grit that roughs up the edges; Josh isn’t looking for hold you close with a smooth touch (although the horns that start Plant Words or the flute that permeates the guitar and yelps on Believe in Souls do set the mood). No, the energy is more animalistic, like the end of a night in the dark corner of a club as you try to restrain yourself until you are behind closed doors.

It’s only five songs, all of which you can get for free if you sign up for the Paper Bag mailing list by the end of the week, but it’s hard to not enjoy the effort.
