Friday Fun:: Paper Lions

Paper Lions

I am, if nothing else, a giver of credit. To put it more succinctly in terms of this music blog: if I like something, I’ll post it. I’m a simple man, the hill’s unfrozen caveman rap guy, and so my credentials as a reviewer of music outside that spectrum are pretty much non-existent, but I know what I like, and I’ll stand by my record of liking things that are pretty good. Well, for the most part anyway, I’m sure you could find a post or two that would make me cringe. That said, you can bet this post about PEI’s Paper Lions won’t end up as a cringe-post.

These four eager young gents found themselves on our PEI mixtape last year, and their recently released EP Trophies justifies their selection I’d say. I’ve had multiple occasions over the last couple weeks where one of their songs has come on via the ole shuffle and I’ve found myself bopping and singing along. After all, I don’t really want to be belting out the “cut it on the sexy dancing floor” part from Don’t Touch That Dial when I’m alone in the car, but I’m man enough to admit that it’s happened…you bet your sweet ass it’s happened. Ahem, right then, where were we?

Yes, Paper Lions, and their energetic, guitar driven indie rock. If your weekend could use a little boost, then you should certainly add Trophies to your case. Upbeat numbers like Lost The War, Stay Here For A While, and the aforementioned Don’t Touch That Dial should have you bobbing along blissfully, while slower but still guitar-heavy tunes like Hands and Trouble show the band don’t take themselves too seriously. Plus these clean cut lads are from Belfast, Prince Edward Island, and considering I’m a Maritimer whose wife has family in Northern Ireland, that’s a hometown I can get behind.
