File Under Awesome:: Noyes 7″ series (yes, we are giving one away)

For the last few years, Noyes Records has been fighting the good fight. Noise-laden bands from all over Nova Scotia have found the vinyl obsessed label willing to put money into acetate and hope word of mouth and cranked up amps get the songs heard. Some would call it altruistic (me); others a huge risk or a recipe for disaster. Either way, respect is due especially since the label is getting set to launch the first installment of their hella-awesome 7″ subscription series.

And talk about exploding out of the gate. Batting lead off is Halifax art noise rockers Dog Day, with the The Scratches EP. The band has undergone some changes and is a more compact unit (just Nancy and Seth) with a more compact sound. Not surprisingly, that focused pop-laced, noisy bliss grabs you instantly (especially on the opening bouncy, pseudo punk riff of “Scratches”), but more exciting is that the three songs hint at the hard working Halifax band finally getting the bigger reception they deserve. On this EP, Nancy and Seth shine the spotlight directly on the songs, instead of using a soft focus hoping to encase the melodies in an artistic warmth and the results are strong. It’s really energetic, and still touching stuff.

Right now you are probably asking, “how does the rest of the series look?” To be completely honest, I’m not sure I could have hand-picked a better lineup. Over the next 10 months, you are going to hear new songs from herohill favs, Cousins, Duzheknew, Play Guitar, Doug Mason, Cold Warps, Homo Duplex (hell yeah!), and We Need Secrets. So here are the details; if you act now, you can get them all on limited edition color vinyl that matches the cover sleeves. What will it cost you? Forty bucks, plus you are going to get some posters and some pins.

Don’t sleep on this folks. There are only 100 color - well at most only 98, as I bought one and thanks to the good people at Noyes, we have one subscription to give away. That’s 8 records for the low, low cost of FREE, but since this is a pretty big deal we want to see you put in some effort. To enter, you have to get on the ole twitterz and tweet about the 7″ series and obviously include @noyesrecords and @herohill so we can monitor the situation. Don’t have a twitter account, well, they are free, so get one. That’s all that’s stopping you from getting 8 amazing 7″. Enter now, and help spread the word on this great idea.
