You crack me up like my iPhone screen, or the Mayor of the city of my home team.
haha, Rob Forb, amirite? Do we still care about him this week? You have to say, despite his being perhaps the worst example of a human being one could possibly fashion with a gigantic amount of surplus flesh and bone, Toronto’s Mayor is providing us all with endless fodder for jokes and one-liners, as is proven in that line from the title track of T.O. emcee NewBreedMC’s last release Your Mom Likes My MixTape. Ha! Unless you have a Burton Cummings feature on your mixtape, she most certainly does not, but I like it a great deal.
Admittedly, I don’t know much about the back catalogue of NewBreedMC, aka Omari Parsons, but I’d heard him on a couple other projects and been impressed enough to finally get around to checking out his August-released mixtape. As it turns out, this is the perfect way to get familiar with his work, as it’s a mix of previously released and new material with only a few features from T.O. underground stalwarts like pHoenix Pagliacci, Relic, UNO and LouWop the Dirty General. NewBreed has a confident, mid-tempo flow - there’s no gimmicks or overly esoteric material here, but he strides with purpose across each and every beat he’s given. There’s thoughtful stuff here, with plenty of attention given to real-world issues that plenty of us deal with: relationships, family, and trying to find our own place in the world.
Although the internet usually makes me feel like I’m in the minority, I’m glad there’s still guys like NewBreedMC making this kind of classic sounding hip hop. If you feel the same then I’d advise you to give Your Mom Likes My MixTape a spin.
